WHAT'S WITH ALL THESE NAMES? | 1Chronicles 01-02

1Chronicles 01.01 "Adam, Seth, Enosh,"

1&2 Chronicles was originally one book (and still is in the Hebrew Bible). It chronicles the history of Israel, beginning with Adam and concluding with the decree of Cyrus (2Chronicles 36.23) in 538 BC. From Adam to Saul it is mainly covered by genealogies with an occasional short commentary.

The book begins by referencing Genesis 05, the genealogy of Adam.

Oftentimes, reading genealogies can be boring to us. Why would God find it important to insert all theses names, most of whom we either can't pronounce or we don't know.

Genealogies were important for the Jews, being able to trace who your ancestors was a source of pride for the Jew (1Timothy 01.04; Titus 03.09).

Having a genealogy  proved what tribe you were from, especially if you were from the priestly tribe of Levi (see Ezra 02.61-62).

1Chronicles 01 gives us the genealogies of the early patriarchs, tracing from the beginning of time to Abraham.

1Chronicles 02 gives us the genealogy of Judah, the tribe that David came from, and of our LORD and Savior Jesus.

This is important because it reveals to us the genealogy of Jesus, and the fulfillment of Scripture.
Revelation 05.05 "and one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.”

May I encourage you to take the time to go back and read the accounts of these men? Be reminded of the faithfulness of God to these men!
