1Chronicles 15.02 l LEARNING FROM PAST MISTAKES

Today’s reading: 1Chronicles 14-16

1Chronicles 15.02 “2 Then David said, “No one is to carry the ark of God but the Levites; for the LORD chose them to carry the ark of God and to minister to Him forever.””

The chronicler gives the account of David enlarging his family (1Chronicles14.01-07), the defeat of Israel’s archenemy, the Philistines (1Chronicles 14.08-17), the tent for the Ark (1Chronicles 16.01-07) as well as a beautiful Psalm of Thanksgiving (1Chronicles16.18-36).

In 1Chronicles 15, we see that it took David three months (1Chronicles 13.14) to learn from his past mistakes. David made a few mistakes in trying to bring the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem (1Chronicles 13), and one of those mistakes was tragic, leading to the death of Uzza (1Chronicles 13.09-10).

Let’s take a quick look at the mistakes of David:
01. He consulted with the leaders of the army (1Chronicles 13.01)
02. He had the Ark transported on a cart (1Chronicles 13.07)

David should have consulted with the priests about the proper way to carry the Ark. The Law of Moses required that the Ark was to be carried ONLY by those from the priestly tribe of Levi, the Levites, and it was to be carried using poles inserted through the corner rings of the Ark. (Exodus 25.10-22; Numbers 04.04-15, 19-20; Deuteronomy 10.08; Deuteronomy 31.09; Joshua03.03; Joshua 06.06)

The first sin of David led to his second sin, which caused the death of an innocent man (1Chronicles 13.09-10).

Once Uzza was struck down, David became angry with the LORD (1Chronicles 13.11-12)! How ironic, that if David would have listened to the Word of the LORD and be obedient in His ways, this would not have happened!

Once the LORD killed Uzza, it caused a delay of three months (1Chronicles13.14) until David realized his sin, and the error of his ways.

Our sin will be exposed and find us out (Numbers 32.23; 1Corinthians 04.05). David had to deal with the consequences of his sin (Galatians06.07-09).

Now we see that David has been given a second chance by the LORD to do what he should have done right the first time.

O Praise the LORD for second chances, the opportunity to learn from past mistakes! He has forgiven us of our sins (Psalm 103.12; Titus 02.14; 1John 01.09).
