2Chronicles 01.15-16 “15
The king made silver and gold as plentiful in Jerusalem as stones, and he made
cedars as plentiful as sycamores in the lowland. 16 Solomon’s horses were
imported from Egypt and from Kue; the king’s traders procured them from Kue for
a price.”
In todays reading, the chronicler
gives us the worship of Solomon at Gibeon (2Chronicles 01.01-06), Solomon asks for
wisdom (2Chronicles 01.07-13), the wealth of Solomon (2Chronicles 01.14-17), Solomon starts the
construction of the Temple and enlists the help of Huram (or Hiram) the King of
Tyre to help supply the building of the Temple (2Chronicles 02). We are then given the
dimensions and materials of the Temple (2Chronicles 03).
When Israel was about to enter the Promised Land, the LORD
gave to the children of Israel through Moses what would be the requirements of
a king to rule and reign in Israel (Deuteronomy 17.14-20).
Here is a quick list of the LORD’s requirements of a king
found in Deuteronomy 17.14-20:
01. He is to be Godly
02. He is to a Jew
03. He is NOT to multiply horses for himself, and not go to
Egypt to multiply horses
04. He is NOT to multiply wives for himself, because they
will turn his heart away from the LORD
05. He is NOT to multiply silver or gold
06. He is to write a copy of the Law for himself
07. He is to keep the scroll that he copied the Law onto
near him and he is to read from it, so that he may know how to properly govern
God’s people.
Notice the three “NOTS” in the LORD’s requirements?
No multiplying of mares, maids and money!
The LORD knew that if a king multiplies mares, maids and
money, the temptation to trust in those material things and to listen to his
wives would be so great that his heart would be turned away from God.
We see in our text today, that Solomon did not listen to the
Word of the LORD.
We can ssee what happened when he multiplied maids:
1Kings 11.03-04 “3 He
had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines, and his
wives turned his heart away. 4 For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his
heart away after other gods; and his heart was not wholly devoted to the LORD
his God, as the heart of David his father had
been.”
