Titus 01.10-16 “10 For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers & deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain. 12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not paying attention to Jewish myths & commandments of men who turn away from the truth. 15 To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled & unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind & their conscience are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable & disobedient & worthless for any good deed.”
Last time we saw that Titus was to set up Quality Leaders (Titus 01.05-09) in the churches
on Crete. So w/that as a backdrop & even as a contrast, Paul now instructs Titus
on how to Biblically Expo$e Fal$e
Teacher$. 01. Identify False
Teachers (Titus
01.10-13a); 02. Severely
Reprove False Teachers (Titus 01.13b-14); & 03. Watch How False Teachers Live (Titus 01.15-16).
03. Watch How False Teachers Live (Titus 01.15-16)
Titus 01.15-16 “15 To
the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled & unbelieving,
nothing is pure, but both their mind & their conscience are defiled. 16
They profess to know God, but by their
deeds they deny Him, being detestable
& disobedient & worthless for any good deed.”
Paul reminds Titus that what Jesus taught about being pure
was mainly a matter of the internal, the condition of the heart & not the
external.
Mark 07.15 “15 there is
nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the
things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man.”
Luke 11.39-41 “39 But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup & of the
platter; but inside of you, you are full of robbery & wickedness. 40
“You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make
the inside also? 41 “But give that which is w/in
as charity, & then all things are clean for you.”
So the problem w/false teachers is that they claim to be
followers of God on the outside, but on the inside they were defiled.
“15 to those who are defiled” G3392. miaino me-ah'-ee-no;
perhaps a primary verb; to sully or taint, i.e. contaminate (cer. or
morally):-- defile.
Thayer-to dye w/another
color, to stain, to defile w/sin, pollute, sully, contaminate, soil in a moral
sense
This was an issue in the days of Zechariah, & the LORD
told Zechariah to address it.
Zechariah 07.05-06 “5 “Say to all the people of the land & to the
priests, ‘When you fasted & mourned in the fifth & seventh months these
seventy years, was it actually for Me that you fasted? 6 ‘When you eat &
drink, do you not eat for yourselves & do you not drink for yourselves?”
False teaching leads to false living. Theological error
always leads to moral failure.
That’s why we see so many “pastors’ who fail morally,
because they have been teaching strange doctrine, & usually they do that to
justify their lifestyle of sin.
1John 02.04 “4 The
one who says, “I have come to know Him,” & does not keep His commandments,
is a liar, & the truth is not in him;”
Paul talking about false teachers
said…
1Timothy 06.10 “10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of
evil, & some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith &
pierced themselves w/many griefs.”
A defiled
conscience & a mind are represented as the source of the errors that Paul
warns Timothy about.
1Timothy 01.19 “19 keeping faith & a good conscience, which some
have rejected & suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.”
1Timothy 03.09 “9 but holding
to the mystery of the faith w/a clear conscience.”
1Timothy 06.05 “5 & constant friction between men of depraved mind &
deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.”
Titus 01.16 “16 They
profess to know God, but by their
deeds they deny Him, being detestable
& disobedient & worthless for any good deed.”
They talk all about how they
love & know God, but their deeds deny Him.
“16 deeds” G2041. ergon
er'-gon; from a primary (but
obsolete) ergw ergo (to work); toil (as an effort or occupation); by
implication, an act:-- deed, doing, labour, work.
Thayer-an act,
deed, thing done: the idea of working is emphasized in opp. To that which is
less than work
Paul told Timothy to stay away
from these false teachers.
2Timothy 03.05 “5 holding to a form of godliness, although they have
denied its power; Avoid such men as these.”
“16 …being detestable & disobedient &
worthless for any good deed.”
Paul says that not only are these false teachers detestable
& disobedient, but also they are worthless.
“16 worthless” G96. adokimos
ad-ok'-ee-mos; from 1 (as a negative
particle) & 1384; unapproved, i.e. rejected; by implication, worthless (literally or morally):--
castaway, rejected, reprobate.
Thayer-not standing the test, not approved: properly of metals & coin,
unfit for something
Literally
rejected as worthless when tested.
Romans 01.28 “28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God
any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are
not proper,”
2Timothy 03.08 “8 Just as Jannes & Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of
depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith.”
But look at what Jesus said.
John 08.31 “31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had
believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;”
