1Chronicles 10.13-14
“13 So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against the LORD, because
of the word of the LORD which he did not keep; and also because he asked
counsel of a medium, making inquiry of
it, 14 and did not inquire of the LORD. Therefore He killed him and turned
the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.”
As the chronicler wraps up the
genealogies, and starts to focus on the Davidic reign of Israel, he briefly
gives an account for the end of Saul.
In 1Samuel 31, there is no reason that is
given for the death of Saul and why the kingdom is transferred to David. But as
we come to the end of our reading today, we see specifically that the
chronicler points out that God’s judgment was administered to Saul because of
Saul’s disobedience to the Word of God, because he consulted a medium.
Saul’s disobedience to the Word of
God
-He impatiently offers the burnt
offering (1Samuel 13.09-14)
-He spared the king of the
Amalekites and took the flocks to “sacrifice to the LORD” (1Samuel 15.13-29)
Saul consulted a medium (1Samuel 28.07-20)
-This was in direct violation of
the Law of God (Exodus 22.18; Leviticus 19.31;
Leviticus 20.06;
Deuteronomy18.10-14; Isaiah 08.19-20), and
shows us what happens when we ignore the Word of God and left on our own. We
start to do things that we would never have dreamt of years before. Those who
abandon the LORD will eventually be abandoned by Him (1Samuel 28.06). The depravity of man when he does not follow the Word
of God.
It is interesting to note that the
Hebrew word for “committed” (1Chronicles10.13 lem ma‘al) and it means to cover up, to act covertly,
treacherously, to commit a trespass or transgression.
Just like our parents in the
garden, we all try to cover and hide from our sin, thinking that God or others
will not notice (Genesis 03.07-10).
But like Adam and Eve, as well as Saul, we forget that the Bible says that our
sins will be found out (Numbers 32.23;
Psalm 90.08; Isaiah 59.01-02; Isaiah 59.12;
1Corinthians 04.05)
