Titus 01.03-04 | Jesus the Saviour pt03

03. The Gracious Giver (Titus 01.04)
Titus 01.04 “4 To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace & peace from God the Father & Christ Jesus our Savior.”

“4 To Titus,” G5103. Titov Titos tee'-tos; of Latin origin but uncertain signification; Titus, a Christian:-- Titus.

Titus=pleasing

“4 my true” G1103. gnhsiov gnesios gnay'-see-os; from the same as 1077; legitimate (of birth), i.e. genuine:-- own, sincerity, true.
G1077. genesia genesia ghen-es'-ee-ah; neuter plural of a derivative of 1078; birthday ceremonies:-- birthday.

Thayer-legitimately born, not spurious, genuine, true, sincere

This is similar to what Paul called Timothy in…
1 Timothy 01.02 “2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy & peace from God the Father & Christ Jesus our Lord.”

By calling both Timothy & Titus his “children in the faith” seems to suggest that Paul was the one who led them to a saving faith in Jesus.

Titus was a young man who had spent a lot of time w/Paul, traveling & ministering together.

“4 child” G5043. teknon teknon tek'-non; from the base of 5098; a child (as produced):-- child, daughter, son.
G5098. timwria timoria tee-mo-ree'-ah; from 5097; vindication, i.e. (by implication) a penalty:-- punishment.
G5097. timwrew timoreo tim-o-reh'-o; from a comparative of 5092 & ourov ouros (a guard); properly, to protect one's honor, i.e. to avenge (inflict a penalty):-- punish.
G5092. timh time tee-may'; from 5099; a value, i.e. money paid, or (concretely & collectively) valuables; by analogy, esteem (especially of the highest degree), or the dignity itself:-- honour, precious, price, some.
G5099. tinw tino tee'-no; strengthened for a primary tiw tio tee'-o (which is only used as an alternate in certain tenses); to pay a price, i.e. as a penalty:-- be punished with.

Thayer-the name is transferred to that intimate & reciprocal relationship formed between men by the bonds of love, friendship, trust, just as between parents & children. The pupils or disciples are called children of their teachers, because the latter by their instruction nourish the minds of their pupils & mould their characters…in affectionate address

Titus 01.04 “4 To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace & peace from God the Father & Christ Jesus our Savior.”

“4 common” G2839. koinov koinos koy-nos'; probably from 4862; common, i.e. (literally) shared by all or several, or (cer.) profane:-- common, defiled, unclean, unholy.
G4862. sun sun soon; a primary preposition denoting union; w/or together (but much closer than 3326 or 3844), i.e. by association, companionship, process, resemblance, possession, instrumentality, addition, etc.:-- beside, with. In composition it has similar applications, including completeness.

Jude 01.03 “3 Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.”

“4 faith” G4102. pistiv pistis pis'-tis; from 3982; persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself:-- assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.
G3982. peiyw peitho pi'-tho; a primary verb; to convince (by argument, true or false); by analogy, to pacify or conciliate (by other fair means); reflexively or passively, to assent (to evidence or authority), to rely (by inward certainty):-- agree, assure, believe, have confidence, be (wax) conflent, make friend, obey, persuade, trust, yield.

“4 Grace, mercy & peace”=Textus Receptus
This is what we all should want, not only for ourselves but those whom we love…that they may have grace to help them in the time of need, & mercy to pardon what is wrong, & so that all may have peace w/God the Father & Christ Jesus our Lord.

“4 Grace” G5485. cariv charis khar'-ece; from 5463; graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, & its reflection in the life; including gratitude):-- acceptable, benefit, favour, gift, grace(-ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank(-s, -worthy).
G5463. cairw chairo khah'-ee-ro; a primary verb; to be "cheer"ful, i.e. calmly happy or well-off; impersonally, especially as salutation (on meeting or parting), be well:-- farewell, be glad, God speed, greeting, hall, joy(-fully), rejoice.

“4 peace” G1515. eirhnh eirene i-ray'-nay; probably from a primary verb eirw eiro (to join); peace (literally or figuratively); by implication, prosperity:-- one, peace, quietness, rest, + set at one again.

Grace is getting what you don’t deserve…saved by grace
Ephesians 02.08-09 “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; & that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

2Timothy 01.09 “9 who has saved us & called us w/a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose & grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity,”

Mercy is NOT getting what you deserve…which is Hell, & we get that by the provision of our Saviour!
John 03.16 “16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

See also (Romans 05.07-08; 1Peter 02.24; 1Peter 03.18: 1John 03.16)

Peace comes only from knowing the Prince of Peace.
Romans 05.01 “1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace w/God through our Lord Jesus Christ,”

Philippians 04.07 “7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts & your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Colossians 03.15 “15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; & be thankful.”

See also (Romans 15.13; 1Corthinans 14.33; Colossians 01.20)

True Grace, mercy & peace all only come “4…from God the Father & Christ Jesus our Savior.

“4 God the Father” G3962. pathr pater pat-ayr'; apparently a primary word; a "father" (literally or figuratively, near or more remote):-- father, parent.

“4 & the Lord Christ Jesus our Savior.” =Textus Receptus

“4 Savior.” G4990. swthr soter so-tare'; from 4982; a deliverer, i.e. God or Christ:-- saviour.
G4982. swzw sozo sode'-zo; from a primary swv sos (contraction for obsolete saov saos, "safe"); to save, i.e. deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):-- heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.

Thayer-to the Messiah, & Jesus as the Messiah, through whom God gives salvation

1John 05.14 “14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”

James tells us that God is the giver of all good gifts…
James 01.17 “17 Every good thing given & every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, w/whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.”

We have seen here that Paul would agree w/James, stating that God is the giver of all good gifts. He has given us grace, mercy, peace, as well as His only Son to be our Saviour!

So we saw Jesus the Saviour in 03 ways…01. The Word of God Manifested (Titus 01.03a); 02. The Proclamation of Salvation (Titus 01.03b); & 03. The Gracious Giver (Titus 01.04).
