Titus 01.05-09 “5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that
you would set in order what remains & appoint elders in every city as I
directed you, 6 namely, if any man is above reproach, the husband of one wife,
having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion. 7 For the
overseer must be above reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not
quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain,
8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,
9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance w/the teaching, so that
he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine & to refute those who
contradict.”
Paul tells Titus 04 categories
of a Quality Leader…01. The Personal (Titus 01.06-07a); 02. The Negative (Titus
01.07b); 03. The Positive (Titus 01.08) & 04. A Reliable Man of the Word (Titus
01.09).
When Paul left Crete, he left Titus behind to continue on in
ministering to the people of Crete.
Titus 01.05 “5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you
would set in order what remains & appoint elders in every city as I
directed you,”
Because of these false teachers, we see that Paul wanted
Titus to set up leaders for each church in every city, who were…

01.09)
Titus 01.09 “9 holding fast the faithful word which is in
accordance w/the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound
doctrine & to refute those who contradict.”
According to the Holy Spirit, an elder, a pastor is a 01 who
understands the truth, holds onto the truth, is able to teach it & refute
those who oppose it.
The job of the Bible teacher is to interpret & explain
God’s Word as clearly as possible. He is to NEVER create messages or teachings
from his own wisdom, or what will benefit him or what will encourage or convict
the people. He is to simply teach the Word, & let the Holy Spirit do the
convicting.

doctrine & does not agree w/sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, &
w/the doctrine conforming to godliness, 4 he is conceited & understands
nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions & disputes
about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil
suspicions, 5 & constant friction between men of depraved mind &
deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.”
2Timothy 02.01-0s2 “1 You
therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 The things
which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these
to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”

Biblical usage…to be sound, to be well, to be in good health
The
root word for “sound” is hugies (who-ge-ace), & it is where we get our
English word “hygiene”.
It is translated as “safe & sound” in the story of the
prodigal son…
Luke 15:27 “27 “And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, &
your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him back safe & sound (G5198. ugiainw
hugiaino hoog-ee-ah'-ee-no).’”
So what Paul is saying here is that we need teaching that is
helpful for you as a CHRISTian, not what is going to make you have “You’re Best
Life Now” or “Every Day a Friday” or going to make you feel good as you leave.
2Timothy 3.16-17 “16 All Scripture is inspired by God (G2315. yeopneustov
theopneustos theh-op'-nyoo-stos) & profitable for teaching, for
reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of
God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”
Throughout the Pastoral Epistles
(1Timothy; 2Timothy & Titus), Paul is places a great importance on teaching
healthy, sound doctrine.

uncertain affinity; to confute, admonish:-- convict, convince, tell a fault,

gainsay(-er), speak
against.
G473. anti anti an-tee'; a primary
particle; opposite, i.e. instead or because of (rarely in addition to):-- for,
in the room of. Often used in composition to denote contrast, requital,
substitution, correspondence, etc.
G3004. legw
lego leg'-o; a primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e.
(figuratively) relate (in words [usually of systematic or set discourse;
whereas 2036 & 5346 generally refer to an individual expression or speech
respectively; while 4483 is properly, to break silence merely, & 2980 means
an extended or random harangue]); by implication, to mean:-- ask, bid, boast,
call, describe, give out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell,
utter.
Thayer-to
speak against, gainsay, contradict
Acts 18.27-28 “27 And when he
(Apollos) wanted to go across to Achaia, the brethren encouraged him &
wrote to the disciples to welcome him; & when he had arrived, he greatly
helped those who had believed through grace, 28 for he powerfully refuted the
Jews in public, demonstrating by the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.”
Paul tells Titus 04 categories
of a Quality Leader…01. The Personal (Titus 01.06-07a); 02. The Negative (Titus
01.07b); 03. The Positive (Titus 01.08) & 04. A Reliable Man of the Word (Titus
01.09).
LORD willing next week we will
look at Titus 01.10-16 & “The False Teachers”
Closing Prayer
Father, may Your Holy Spirit guide us in who we listen to
& sit under when we are taught Your Word. May we be guilty of being
discerning & being Bereans (Acts 17.11)! Maranatha (1Corinthians 16.22),
Come Quickly LORD Jesus! Amen
