Titus 01.03-04 | Jesus the Saviour pt02

02. The Proclamation of Salvation (Titus 01.03b)
Titus 01.03b “3 …in the proclamation w/which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior,”

“3 in the proclamation” G2782. khrugma kerugma kay'-roog-mah; from 2784; a proclamation (especially of the gospel; by implication, the gospel itself):-- preaching.
G2784. khrussw kerusso kay-roos'-so; of uncertain affinity; to herald (as a public crier), especially divine truth (the gospel):-- preacher(-er), proclaim, publish. Hebrew 03745.

Thayer-the announcement of salvation procured by Christ & to be had through Him

Romans 10.14-15 “14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear w/o a preacher? 15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!”” (quoting Isaiah 52.07; Nahum 01.15)

Titus 01.03b “3 …in the proclamation w/which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior,”

Isaiah 52.07 “7 How lovely on the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace And brings good news of happiness, Who announces salvation, And says to Zion, “Your God reigns!””

Nahum 01.15 “15 Behold, on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; Pay your vows. For never again will the wicked one pass through you; He is cut off completely.”

Romans 16.25-27 “25 Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel & the preaching (G2782. khrugma kerugma kay'-roog-mah) of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery (G3466. musthrion musterion moos-tay'-ree-on) which has been kept secret for long ages past, 26 but now is manifested (G5319. fanerow phaneroo fan-er-o'-o), & by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith; 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forever. Amen.”

Ephesians 02.14-22 “14 For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one & broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, 15 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace, 16 & might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity. 17 AND HE CAME AND PREACHED PEACE TO YOU WHO WERE FAR AWAY, AND PEACE TO THOSE WHO WERE NEAR (quoting Isaiah 57.19); 18 for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers & aliens, but you are fellow citizens w/the saints, & are of God’s household, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles & prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.”

Ephesians 03.01-10 “1 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles-- 2 if indeed you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace which was given to me for you; 3 that by revelation there was made known to me the mystery (G3466. musthrion musterion moos-tay'-ree-on), as I wrote before in brief. 4 By referring to this, when you read you can understand my insight into the mystery (G3466. musthrion musterion moos-tay'-ree-on) of Christ, 5 which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles & prophets in the Spirit; 6 to be specific, that the Gentiles are fellow heirs & fellow members of the body, & fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel, 7 of which I was made a minister, according to the gift of God’s grace which was given to me according to the working of His power. 8 To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ, 9 & to bring to light what is the administration of the mystery (G3466. musthrion musterion moos-tay'-ree-on) which for ages has been hidden in God who created all things; 10 so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers & the authorities in the heavenly places.

1Timothy 02.05 “5 For there is one God, & one mediator also between God & men, the man Christ Jesus,”

Titus 01.03b “3 …in the proclamation w/which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior,”

“3 entrusted” G4100. pisteuw pisteuo pist-yoo'-o; from 4102; to have faith (in, upon, or w/respect to, a person or thing), i.e. credit; by implication, to entrust (especially one's spiritual well-being to Christ):-- believe(-r), commit (to trust), put in trust with.
G4102. pistiv pistis pis'-tis; from 3982; persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself:-- assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.
G3982. peiyw peitho pi'-tho; a primary verb; to convince (by argument, true or false); by analogy, to pacify or conciliate (by other fair means); reflexively or passively, to assent (to evidence or authority), to rely (by inward certainty):-- agree, assure, believe, have confidence, be (wax) conflent, make friend, obey, persuade, trust, yield.

Thayer-to be entrusted w/a thing

This word in the original Greek is written in the Aorist tense, Passive voice, Indicative mood (5681)…
Aorist tense= the concept of the verb is considered w/o regard for past, present, or future time.
Passive voice= the passive voice represents the subject as being the recipient of the action.  E.g., in the sentence, "The boy was hit by the ball," the boy receives the action.
Indicative mood= The indicative mood is a simple statement of fact.  If an action really occurs or has occurred or will occur, it will be rendered in the indicative mood.

1Corinthians 09.16-18 “16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for I am under compulsion; for woe is me if I do not preach the gospel. 17 For if I do this voluntarily, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have a stewardship entrusted (G4100. pisteuw pisteuo pist-yoo'-o) to me. 18 What then is my reward? That, when I preach the gospel, I may offer the gospel w/o charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.”

Galatians 01.10 “10 For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.”

1Thessalonians 02.01-06 “1 For you yourselves know, brethren, that our coming to you was not in vain, 2 but after we had already suffered & been mistreated in Philippi, as you know, we had the boldness in our God to speak to you the gospel of God amid much opposition. 3 For our exhortation does not come from error or impurity or by way of deceit; 4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted (G4100. pisteuw pisteuo pist-yoo'-o) w/the gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who examines our hearts. 5 For we never came w/flattering speech, as you know, nor w/a pretext for greed--God is witness-- 6 nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, even though as apostles of Christ we might have asserted our authority.”

1Timothy 01.11-17 “11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, w/which I have been entrusted (G4100. pisteuw pisteuo pist-yoo'-o). 12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service, 13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer & a persecutor & a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; 14 & the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, w/the faith & love which are found in Christ Jesus. 15 It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all. 16 Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor & glory forever & ever. Amen.”

“3 to the commandment” G2003. epitagh epitage ep-ee-tag-ay'; from 2004; an injunction or decree; by implication, authoritativeness:-- authority, commandment.
G2004. epitassw epitasso ep-ee-tas'-so; from 1909 & 5021; to arrange upon, i.e. order:-- charge, command, injoin.
G5021. tassw tasso tas'-so; a prolonged form of a primary verb (which latter appears only in certain tenses); to arrange in an orderly manner, i.e. assign or dispose (to a certain position or lot):-- addict, appoint, determine, ordain, set.

Thayer-an injunction, mandate, command

Titus 01.03b “3 …in the proclamation w/which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior,”

“3 of God our Savior,” G4990. swthr soter so-tare'; from 4982; a deliverer, i.e. God or Christ:-- saviour.
G4982. swzw sozo sode'-zo; from a primary swv sos (contraction for obsolete saov saos, "safe"); to save, i.e. deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):-- heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.

Notice that Paul mentions that God (G2316. yeov theos) is our Savior!

JW New World Translation (NWT):
Titus 01.01-04 “1 Paul, a slave of God & an apostle of Jesus Christ according to the faith of God’s chosen ones & the accurate knowledge of the truth which accords w/godly devotion 2 upon the basis of a hope of the everlasting life which God, who cannot lie, promised before times long lasting, 3 whereas in his own due times he made his word manifest in the preaching w/which I was entrusted, under command of our Savior, God; 4 to Titus, a genuine child according to a faith shared in common: May there be undeserved kindness & peace from God [the] Father & Christ Jesus our Savior.” (NWT)

-The NWT acknowledges that God cannot lie (Titus 01.02)
-The NWT says that Paul was entrusted under command of our Savior, God. (Titus 01.03)
-Then the NWT (Titus 01.04) calls Jesus our Savior!

-The NWT calls God Savior as well as Jesus!

As is common in the Pastorals, Paul referred to God as Savior (6x…1Timothy 01.01; 1Timothy 02.03; 1Timothy 04.10; Titus 01.03; Titus 02.10; Titus 02.13; Titus 03.04).

1Timothy 01.01 “1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior (G4990. swthr soter so-tare'), & of Christ Jesus, who is our hope,”

1Timothy 02.03 “3 This is good & acceptable in the sight of God our Savior (G4990. swthr soter so-tare'),”

1Timothy 04.10 “10 For it is for this we labor & strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior (G4990. swthr soter so-tare') of all men, especially of believers.”

Titus 03.04-06 “4 But when the kindness of God our Savior (G4990. swthr soter so-tare') & His love for mankind appeared, 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration & renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior (G4990. swthr soter so-tare'),”

What we see w/this is God’s eternal plan to rescue a people for Himself formed the main focus of Paul’s ministry, rather than any of this worldly agenda that we see so prevalent today to liberate social issues.

God being our Saviour is not just a Pauline teaching, but found throughout the Old Testament as well (11x)…

Isaiah 49.26 “26 “I will feed your oppressors w/their own flesh, And they will become drunk w/their own blood as w/sweet wine; And all flesh will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior (H3467. evy yasha‘ yaw-shah') And your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.””

Isaiah 60.16 “16 “You will also suck the milk of nations And suck the breast of kings; Then you will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior (H3467. evy yasha‘ yaw-shah') And your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”
