Now in our daily reading (Exodus10-12) we see the end of the Battle of the Gods, the Passover & the Exodus of Israel. Ok there is a ton here, so be patient & bear w/me!
So here we see the end of the 10 Plagues, & to remind you of what we saw yesterday, that God is executing judgments against the false gods of Egypt.
Exodus 12:12 “12 ‘For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, & will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man & beast; & against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments--I am the LORD.”

09. Exodus10.21-29 Darkness (that was felt!) Ra, Aten, Horus, Tem, Shu
10. Exodus12.29-30 Death of firstborn Pharaoh’s own dynasty
Again, remember, we become like the gods that we worship…
Psalms 135:18 “18 Those who make them will be like them, Yes, everyone who trusts in them.”
The Passover (Exodus 12.01-28)
Exodus 12:1, 2 So here we see a new beginning of the children of Israel, this is the month of Nisan, which is March-April.
So here we see 05 interesting things about the lamb.
01. It’s Personal
Exodus 12:3-5 Notice the progression from just “a lamb” to “the lamb” to finally “Your lamb”. Identifying it now as something that was not personal to something that is.
This parallels “a Savior” in Lk02.11, “the Savior” in Jn04.42, “my Savior” in Lk01.47.
Luke 2:11 “11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
John 4:42 “42 & they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves & know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.””
Luke 1:47 “47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.”
It is not enough to call Christ “a Savior” (one among many), “the Savior” (for somebody else). Each of us must be able to say “He is my Saviour!”.
02. Chosen Before It Was Killed
Exodus 12:3-4 This lamb was to be chosen on the 10th day, before it was to be slain.
The New Testament refers to Jesus as the Lamb of God.
John 1:29 “29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him & said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”
Just as the lamb was to be chosen before it was killed, so too was Jesus!
Isaiah 53:7 “7 He was oppressed & He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.”
1 Peter 2:18-20 “18 Servants, be submissive to your masters w/all respect, not only to those who are good & gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable. 19 For this finds favor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is there if, when you sin & are harshly treated, you endure it w/patience? But if when you do what is right & suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor w/God.”
Here we are told that Jesus is the Lamb of God & that He was chosen before the world began.
03. The Lamb Is Spotless
Exodus 12:5 “unblemished”-to be complete, full, perfect, w/o spot, undefiled, upright, it also speaks of integrity & truth.
The lamb that they are to choose had to be perfect & had to be a male. This is also a picture of the perfect Lamb of God, Jesus. We read about this in…
1 Peter 1:19 “19 but w/precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished & spotless, the blood of Christ.”
04. The Lamb Is Watched
Exodus 12:6a They were to pick out the lamb on the 10th day, & on the 14th they were to kill it. During that time they were to watch & observe it to make sure that there was nothing-wrong w/it. During the 3¼ years of Jesus’ earthly ministry, this was done to Him, & the week leading up to His death, He was watched even closer. Even Pilate proclaimed & said…
Luke 23:4 “4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests & the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.””
Hebrews 4:15 “15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize w/our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet w/o sin.”
Isaiah the prophet foretold that the Messiah would bear the sins of many & was wounded for sins not His own.
Isaiah 53:5 “5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 “21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
05. The Lamb Is Slain
Exodus 12:6, 7, 22, 23 Jesus Christ was crucified on the 14th day of this month, the month of Nisan (March-April)!
Just as the death of the lamb marked a new beginning for the Jews, so too does the death of the Lamb of God, Jesus, mark a new beginning for us.
It is great to have a living lamb, but a living lamb cannot save! We are not saved by the example of Christ. Or even by His life; we are saved by His death.
Leviticus 17:11 “11 ‘For the life of the flesh is in the blood, & I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.’”
Hebrews 9:22 “22 And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed w/blood, & w/o shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”
John 10:9 “9 “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, & will go in & out & find pasture.”
Also notice that they were to take the blood & apply it to the top of the doorway, & to the 02 sides. In this way, they were applying it in the form of the cross, signifying what was to come centuries later.
It’s now in the shape of the cross, the 02 sides & the top, w/the blood dripping to the floor!
“The cross is “I” crossed out.”
It’s the blood of our Saviour that protects us from the Destroyer!
Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement the priest would sprinkle the blood in 07 places. As the blood was applied to save the Jews, & it is by the blood that we are saved, we see that the blood of Jesus covers us. He bled from 07 places on the cross. 01. On His head, 02. His back, 03.-04. both of His hands, 05. His side (heart), & 06.-07. both of His feet. His head signifying when we turn our thoughts away from Him, both of His hands when we fail to do the work of the LORD (what we touch, example is stealing, committing sin, His back when we turn our backs on Him, His heart when we turn our hearts away from Him in bitterness, hatred, envy, & His feet when we fail to go where He has commanded us to go.
Exodus 12:8-10 05 things we see here…
01. “8 ‘eat” =consume, devour, burn up
John 6:52-57 “52 Then the Jews began to argue w/one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man & drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 “He who eats My flesh & drinks My blood has eternal life, & I will raise him up on the last day. 55 “For My flesh is true food, & My blood is true drink. 56 “He who eats My flesh & drinks My blood abides in Me, & I in him. 57 “As the living Father sent Me, & I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.”
02. “8 ‘roasted w/fire” =Fire speaks of purifying. Jesus was put on trial & found to be innocent!
Luke 23:4 “4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests & the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.””
03. “8 ‘w/unleavened bread” =leaven is a symbol of sin in the Bible, so we see here that Jesus was of course w/o sin!
1 Corinthians 5:6-8 “6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? 7 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not w/old leaven, nor w/the leaven of malice & wickedness, but w/the unleavened bread of sincerity & truth.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 “21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
Galatians 5:9 “9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough.”
04. “8 ‘bitter herbs” =bitterness
Psalms 69:21 “21 They also gave me gall for my food And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”
Matthew 27:34 “34 they gave Him wine to drink mixed w/gall; & after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.”
05. “10 ‘And you shall not leave any of it over until morning” =Jesus was not left on the cross…
John 19:31-33 “31 Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, & that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came, & broke the legs of the first man & of the other who was crucified w/Him; 33 but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.”
Exodus 12:13 This is where the name for the Passover (Pesach in Hebrew) came from, because the Angel of the LORD passed over those who had the blood (the cross) covering their houses.
Exodus 12:29-39 So they leave w/the Egyptians begging them to leave & giving them whatever they need!
Isn’t it amazing how God provides?
Exodus 12:40-42 God is always faithful to His Word!
Genesis 15:13 “13 God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved & oppressed four hundred years.”
2 Timothy 2:13 “13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.”
