Bringing the Despairing Rest

There are many things that we can look at in Genesis04-06, the chapters that we are reading today.

But we are going to focus on Genesis05.

Here in this chapter, we see the family of Adam.

Genesis 5:1, 2 “1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male & female, & He blessed them & named them Man in the day when they were created.”

But what I wanted to focus on today is the genealogy from Adam to Noah.

What we have following is a chart, with the meaning of each person’s name, how old they were when they had their first son, & how long they lived & when they died.

So assuming that Creation is year 00, & counting from creation…

**Flood was in year 1679, same year that Methuselah died!

Couple of interesting facts about this…

-Adam lived to see all but Noah born.

-Enoch never died & Lamech died before his dad.

-Seth was alive when God took Enoch.

-Enoch & Mahalalel both youngest to have kids (65yrs) Methuselah oldest to have kids (187yrs)

But here is the crux of it all, taking the meaning of each persons name here in Genesis05, we see that it tells us about the gospel message thru this genealogy, so roughly w/the names it says in English, “Man [is] appointed mortal sorrow; [but] the blessed God shall come down teaching [that His] death shall bring [the] despairing rest.”

So we see that God was telling mankind His plan for His Son to come!

Prayer: Father, we thank You that You sent Your Son to be born as a man so that we can have eternal life. Help us to keep eternity in our hearts & live knowing that You will come for us any time! Amen.
