Now in our daily reading (Genesis16-18) we are going to focus on Hagar when she fled from Abram & Sarai.
Hagar was basically thrown out of her master’s house, all because she was being obedient by sleeping w/Abram, which is what Sarai had wanted her to do!
In the legal custom of that day, barren women could give their maid to her husband as a wife, & the child born of that union was regarded as the 1st wife’s son if the husband declared, “You are my son”. But just because it is socially acceptable it doesn’t mean it’s a part of God’s plan!
Genesis 16:13 “13 Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?””
“You are a God who sees” = in Hebrew is El Roi
Here is the only time that we see this name of God.
Have you been in a hard situation? Have you ever asked yourself, where is God? Where is Elohim, the Creator-God who designed me for His will & His purposes? Where is El Elyon, this sovereign God who promises that all things work together for good? Does He really know what’s going on? Does He see? Yes He does!
The omnipresent God is there & His eyes are not shut. He isn’t asleep, He isn’t caught off guard, & He isn’t hindered by the darkness. God Sees!
01. He Knows The Sin That Was Committed Against You (Ge16.04-06)
El Roi saw it all, & there is no hiding the facts from Him. He saw how Sarai dealt harshly w/Hagar, as well as what was done to you!
Proverbs 5:21 “21 For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the LORD, & He watches all his paths.”
El Roi has seen it all, He knows the sin that was committed against you. There will come a day that He will defend you & take care of the one who has wronged you.
Knowing that He is El Roi helps, but you need to remember that as He saw what happened to you, He can & will turn it into good…
Romans 8:28 “28 & we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
He does not forsake those who seek Him…
Psalms 9:10 “10 & those who know Your name will put their trust in You, For You, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.”
02. He Wants You To Go Back & Deal With The Situation (Ge16.09-11)
Often, after being hurt by someone or something, the first desire for us is to run away! Have you ever been mistreated, used & maybe even abused by someone that you trusted or respected? Have you tried to run away from it? Or have you tried to just forget about it & bury it? You say, that the memory, the emotions are too hard to bear; you just want to leave it behind.
Doing that won’t ever let you escape from it! Our brains are like computers & they store these things even when we try to forget them. Then, when you watch a show, hear a song, we smell a smell, & all the memories come flooding back.
Your healing begins by going back to El Roi.
He was awake, He was aware of all that happened to you.
In fact, as we just read, He tells Hagar to go back. (Ge16.09)
If you have been a victim of incest, abuse, or any other injustice, you need to get it out, face it, & deal w/what happened as it really was.
03. He Knows Where Your Loved Ones Are (Ge16.13)
Do you have loved ones that have run away? Or cut themselves off from communication w/you & your family? You may have no idea where they are, but El Roi does because He sees!
He knows what they are doing, what they are thinking & even exactly where they are at, at this very moment!
Proverbs 18:10 “10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it & is safe.”
