Eye Choosing

Now in our daily reading (Genesis19-21) we are going to focus on Lot & the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah.

Now the LORD told Abraham that He was going to destroy Sodom & Gomorrah (Genesis18), so in Genesis19 we see the destruction of the two cities.

Genesis 19:1 “1 Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them & bowed down w/his face to the ground.”

First of all notice that it says “the two angels”. This shows us that one of the three that visited Abraham was the LORD Himself! The LORD Himself would not go into a sinful city like Sodom.

Second I want you to notice that it mentions that Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. Sitting in the city gate meant that you were an important person. It was the place where all transactions took place. Kind of like a modern day city hall. So Lot was heavily involved in the affairs of the city.

This all started when Lot separated from his uncle in Genesis13. But even then we are told that the men of Sodom were wicked.

Genesis 13:13 “13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked exceedingly & sinners against the LORD.”

Lot looked longingly towards what look appealing to his eyes, & moved his family towards Sodom. Eventually he moved into Sodom, & than became one of their judges.

When it came time to leave, look at the response of Lot’s family.

Genesis 19:14 “14 Lot went out & spoke to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, & said, “Up, get out of this place, for the LORD will destroy the city.” But he appeared to his sons-in-law to be jesting.”

Wow! Lot lost his testimony because of compromise! His family only thought he was joking that the city was going to be destroyed!

What are people’s responses when you talk to them that the LORD will be coming back anytime? Do they look at your life like Lot’s & just think that you are only joking?

All because Lot chose w/his eyes, he ended up losing everything, his witness, his wife, his home. He then allowed himself to get drunk, & on consecutive nights impregnated his daughters. The sons born from these incestual unions grew up & tormented the nation of Israel.

When Lot first chose to go towards Sodom, he never thought he would cost him so much! Today, will you choose w/your eyes, or will you choose to follow the LORD in faith? Lot or Abraham? Who will you be like?
