Job 21.07 l WHY DO THE WICKED PROSPER?

Today’s reading: Job 21.01-24.25

Job 21.07 “7 “Why do the wicked still live, Continue on, also become very powerful?”

In today’s reading, Job makes a request for silence from his friends (Job 21.01-06). This is a good reminder that sufferers want someone to listen, not a mouth that condemns. Job then points out the holes in his friends’ arguments, stating that the wicked do prosper (Job 21.07-34). Eliphaz makes his third speech wanting Job to repent (Job 22.01-30), and Job replies to Eliphaz (Job 23.01-24.25).

Job was asking the age-old question that many followers of God have asked, “Why do the wicked prosper?” Job refutes what his friends have been saying that the wicked seemingly enjoy a full life (Job 15.29; Job 15.32-34; Job 18.05; Job 20.05; Job 20.08; Job 20.22), are prosperous with no judgment from God (Job 20.23; Job 20.28-29).

Job knew that the prosperity of the wicked wasn’t just from their own hard work; for it was ultimately provided for by God, whom they scoffed at (Job 22.16-18; Job 21.08-15)!

Justice is not always given out in this life. Many times, the godless do prosper (Job 21.07-15) & the Godly suffer. Just because one prospers and another suffers doesn’t mean they are either ungodly or Godly, they both will eventually die (Job 21.23-26).

Judgment after death is clearly taught throughout the Bible (Psalm 09.17; Isaiah 05.14-15; Isaiah 05.30.33; Ezekiel 32.22-25; Matthew 07.13; Matthew 25.31-46; 2Thessalonians 01.08-09; Revelation 20.15)

Paul said that the hardships of this present world are nothing compared to the glory we will experience in the next (Romans 08.18)!
